How To Treat Your Athlete's Foot And Keep From Spreading The Fungus

Tessa Jean

Athlete's foot is a bothersome fungal infection that usually starts between your toes. The fungus causes your skin to blister and peel. The area between your toes itches and becomes sore. You can buy over-the-counter treatments for this condition, but sometimes they aren't effective. When that happens, you should see a podiatrist for relief. Here are suggestions for treating your feet and preventing the spread of the fungus.

Try Prescription Medications

A trip to the podiatrists is helpful because the doctor can prescribe stronger medications than you can buy over the counter at a pharmacy. You may be given oral drugs or ointment to put between your toes. The stronger medicine can eliminate a fungal infection quicker so the itching and burning will stop. Although your symptoms may disappear quickly, you should use the medication until it's gone to make sure the fungus doesn't come back.

Keep Feet Dry

Athlete's foot grows easily on your toes because they are kept in a warm, dark, and moist environment. If your feet sweat heavily, you should change your socks throughout the day so your feet and toes stay dry. Your podiatrist may also recommend putting foot powder on your feet to help absorb wetness. Wearing loose and well-ventilated shoes may also help as they allow for more air circulation that can help dry out your socks and feet.

Avoid Spreading The Fungus

Athlete's foot is very contagious. You can spread it to other areas of your body by scratching your toes and then scratching elsewhere. If you go barefoot in a shower or bathtub, you can leave fungus behind to infect someone else. For that reason, you should always wear shower shoes in public places such as a locker room or swimming pool. Also, be sure to wear shower shoes at home too. If you don't, then be sure to clean the tub or shower well after using them so no one in your family is infected by your athlete's foot fungus.

There are two types of fungus that can infect your feet. One type is easy to treat and more likely to respond to over-the-counter medications. The other type causes chronic athlete's foot and may require help from a podiatrist to cure. Fungus is often difficult to get rid of since it is hard to keep your feet totally dry all day. If you have athlete's foot you can't seem to clear up, then a podiatrist can help with medications and advice on foot care.

About Me
A Variety of Shoes

Growing up, I was never very interested in buying a large quantity of shoes to pair with my outfits. I rarely owned more than five or six pairs of shoes at any given time. I usually wore either my favorite pair of sneakers, boots, flats, or heels everywhere I went. When I married my amazing husband ten years ago, my shoe closet expanded. My generous spouse encouraged me to buy some several pairs of cute shoes to match my clothing. After shopping for new shoes, I was hooked. Now, I rarely wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Thankfully, I’ve learned that wearing a different type of shoe each day is good for my foot health. On this blog, you will discover the most important benefits of wearing a different kind of shoe every day of the week.
